Lang, Jack
(1939- )
   political figure, minister of culture, minister of education
   Born in Mirecourt, Jack Lang served as director of the university Theater at Nancy (where he established a World Theater Festival) from 1963 to 1972. He then became the mayor of Bloise (1989) and served at the same time as minister of culture (1981-86; 1988-93) and of education (1992-93). Lang encouraged all forms of creativity and urged the national and regional governments to give their support to artists. He also promoted supportive measures for architects, writers, and cinematogra-phers. Lang was an influential figure in the government of FRANÇOIS MITTERRAND.
